(photo: just a few of the happy faces of our rescued pets) retails = 100% rescued! friday, 16 january 2015 15:34 | | | share when new visitors walk into retails, they often ask the question, “is this a pet store?” yes, retails is not a traditional pet store, but a “rescue store”. we get most of our pets in one of two ways. the first way we get pets is from shelters that practice euthanasia due to space or time constraints. our other source of pets is through rehoming. we “rescue” pets from situations where owners can no longer keep their pet(s) due to moving, finances, kids, etc. these pets would often end up in shelters where they sometimes struggle adapting to the environment. our mission is to find the best permanent homes for our pets. we are also foster based so our pets spend a majority of their time in homes where they can be evaluated for any special needs and given lots of love while they are waiting. through fostering, we are also able to help train the pets while determining whether they are house or litter box trained. in early january, we passed the 4,000 pet adoptions mark since retails opened our unique adoption center in washington square mall in october, 2010. as always, we are grateful for all of our supporters, adopters, donors, and volunteers. we challenge you in 2015 to try out volunteering during one of our weekend shifts or fostering a dog or cat. with your support, we can continue our work of featuring amazing pets that are 100% rescued! foster parents save lives! monday, 28 april 2014 00:43 | | | share our foster families saved the lives of more than 1,000 dogs and cats last year. you see, we don’t have a kennel and rely solely on foster homes to give the temporary care and shelter our rescued pets need until they are adopted. we can only rescue as many animals as we have homes for. sadly, too often we must turn away a homeless animal because we simply don’t have anyone to provide short-term care for it. we are always in need of new foster homes. think someone else will say yes and help an animal? that there are plenty of other foster homes? the reality is they won’t and there aren’t. it’s that simple. please help us save more pets by volunteering to keep a homeless pet in your home temporarily until they go to a forever home. won’t you please become a foster parent today? the life of a homeless animal depends on it. click here to read more about becoming a foster parent... mike & bandit 9 months later sunday, 11 august 2013 08:44 | | | share it was one of our most compelling and heartwarming stories -- a dog missing from his owner for 5 years was returned thanks to an implanted microchip 10 days before christmas. the video had over 90,000 views on youtube and touched viewers around the planet! so what happened after they left? we got a visit from mike and bandit at our adoption center and mike updated us. he spent a lot of time getting mats groomed out of bandit's underside when they got home and shortly after coming home, bandit went to the vet where he got a thorough examination, catch-up on his vaccinations and his senior blood panel. the little guy has a clean bill of health! mike is recovery from back surgery for several ruptured discs and still undergoing physical therapy. although he is restricted to lifting no more than 10 lbs., he assured us that he checked and bandit weighs in at 9.5 lbs.! he admits that the injury and the time off have been a blessing in disguise as it has given him much more time to be with bandit and try to make up for lost time! he confided that he really didn't want all the attention and media interviews, being a pretty private guy. but he touched thousands with his story, never giving up holding out hope for bandit's return. he also was the perfect example of the value of microchips for pet identification. to this day, mike is still moved when he recounts that evening when he received the call about bandit and still gets teary-eyed. bandit, on the other hand, is just happy as long as he's with his dad! donate your old android phone to retails, see cute cat pictures?? monday, 27 may 2013 11:00 | | | share do you have an unused, but still mostly functional android phone laying around? retails can use it! as long as the phone is android and has wifi capability (which virtually all do) and a built-in camera, we would like to take your old phone and give it new life as a network camera in our adoption center. a smartphone, even an older model is actually a very powerful handheld computing device! this is still in the experimental phase, but if it works, we could be able to use these cameras to stream pictures or even video from inside our free-roaming cat enclosures. on a more practical level, they can also be used to help us secure our adoption center doing duty as security cameras. it doesn't matter what wireless carrier, or version of android as long as it has wifi and a camera. what if the screen is cracked?
